Míla’s website has now been visited about four million times to view the volcanic activity in Iceland since the first cameras were set up in the vicinity of the volcano. Visitors hail from countries on all continents and at this time there are only four countries/regions which have not taken advantage of Míla’s cameras: North Korea, Somalia, Svalbard/Jan Mayen and Western Sahara
According to measurements of the use of Míla’s webcams, which have been monitored by the web survey company Modernus since last Thursday, Míla is now the largest website in Iceland with by far the largest number of hits. From Thursday evening until midnight Sunday, individual visits to Míla’s webcams numbered 1,112,000, as evidenced by the figures on the Modernus website. In its press release today, Modernus had this to say: “Never in the 10-year history of its web measurement history has Modernus witnessed a spike of this magnitude in its database. This includes measurements at the time of the 9/11 attacks, the Icelandic team handball silver medal at the 2008 Olympics and the European Championship bronze one year later.”The measurements have only been in progress over a few days, but Míla’s website has already broken all previous records and the interest in the eruption is completely without precedent
The popularity of the webcams has been no less than astounding. Many of the world’s largest news stations have contacted Míla requesting permission to use images from the camera on their news sites – interest in the eruption has been tremendous, which is not surprising in light of its extensive impact throughout the continent of Europe. A number of people have also contacted Míla to inquire about the eruption or simply to express their gratitude for Míla's initiative in setting up this service.
